“Excerpts from Nikolai Gogol’s the Diary of a Madman”
Designed and Illustrated by Vladimir Zimakov
Hand bound and printed in 2005

This 19th century story is written in a form of a diary. The diary is lead by a man who is slowly loosing his mind and the tone of the diary entries changes drastically over the period of the story.I took excerpts from each of the main character’s diary entry and manipulated its type, page layout and created illustrations, so that they would best fit the content. The goal was to visually show the values of words and sentences, their relationship to each other and to the page, their expressiveness and weight within the content of the story, as well as to create the harmony and balance between the text and the images. The page layout and the setting of the type were done using letterpress, the illustrations were done with linoleum blocks. The outcome took a form of a limited edition book, as well as an album of individual spreads. This project was produced as part of an MA Communication Design degree at the Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, London .
